Deepen: Serve
A few years ago, I went to my first college volleyball game In quite
some time. It was the first time since they had changed the rules on
when you may score a point so I had to be filled in on the new rules.
When I was growing up and playing volleyball, the rule had always been
you must be the team that served in order to be awarded a point
otherwise it was just a side out. In many ways, the old rule is how
many of us still view serving in the church: you do it to earn points
with God. In fact, most religions talk about the things you do or
don’t do as a way of earning “points” with God. This week as we look
at Ephesians 2:1-10, we’ll see that God doesn’t sit up there as a
great tally keeper seeing how many points we do (or don’t) earn, and I
am ever so grateful for that. In stead, grace changes
EVERYTHING…including the reason why we serve.
